Is Compaq is too damn compact?...

I just received a call from a computer repair shop that I've been assisting at...

"Hey...I just opened this tower of the new computer that the customer left...there's nothing in it..."

What? The tower of a one day old, brand new Compaq CQ2010 contains almost...nothing. The day before, I went into the Base Exchange ("BX") on an Air Force base with an older couple to try to help them choose a new computer. From what they told me about how they use computers, I saw no reason to not suggest purchasing the least expensive computer that was available. Which was the Compaq for $299. And now, I know why the older woman had no problem lifting it...

And now...the motherboard:

The technician who opened they case said the motherboard is about as large as those found in netbooks.

"iTwin is like the two ends of a cable, without the cable."

Well...for me, it's like Dropbox, but it uses two USB devices as physical keys to portals with which you connect through...they are not physically connected, yet they are connected via the internet. (And there is no 2 gigabyte storage limit for accounts that are free.)

The "local" computer is to be "the one at which you are sitting"...however, I rather consider it to be the one that is the "source" or "primary" computer.

The "remote" computer is...the other one.

With the two dongles physically connected together, as they come out of the box, I connected them to a USB port. I opened My Computer to find a drive letter labeled "iTwin". And after double-clicking on it to launch the drive, the installation procedure began.

I set a "Friendly name" for the pair (such as "itwinnumber1"). After registering an eddress, a disable code was sent. I can use it to terminate service between the two dongles, as in the instance I may have lost one of them.

Now, with the two halves paired, when they are plugged into computers they can find each other over the internet.

When the USB dongle is connected to the (local) computer, I have access to a window that I can copy files to...and when the other dongle is connected to a different ("remote") computer, I can access the files (from there) with AES-256 encryption. Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) has been determined by the National Security Agency (NSA) to be secure enough for U.S. Government classified data and information...

A password can be set so, after the two dongles are connected to computers, it will be needed to access files (between both computers). Per iTwin: "If you forget your password, simply pair both halves of your iTwin, plug them into a computer and set a new password..."

I connected the remote dongle to a different computer...it installed, but needed me to log out of the user profile I was in for an update to be installed.

At the local computer, it recognized that the remote dongle was online.

A nice surprise feature is that: "If you leave one half of iTwin connected to your computer at home, iTwin won't let your computer fall asleep..."

When it was sent to me, it was only compatible with Windows. I recently viewed their website, and found there is a "free upgrade" so they can be used with the Apple Macintosh operating system.

In the Getting Started Guide, on page 7, it states: "Drag & drop as many files & folders as you like into the iTwin 'local files' window..."

One thing that you need to know is that: when I dragged a file into the windows for "local" files, and then deleted the file from it's original location...it was deleted from the iTwin window.

I have never worked for Cathy Hughes or Radio One. I HAVE worked for radio stations formatted for Black audiences, that were Black-owned...and am very hesitant to again do so.

I once worked at WYCB in Washington, a gospel station, and to my great surprise found the most "two-faced Christians" I have ever met. When KDKO in Denver was Black-owned, it was unnecessarily stressful with expectations of staff to genuflect to management.

Working for a Black-owned radio station in Milwaukee that was mass-appeal formatted, "Churban/Rythmic", I did not make a lot of money...but the owner, Willie Davis, and the rest of management (that were at All-Pro Broadcasting) were very kind to me. I will again work for him/them if ever given the opportunity. But based on what I have heard about Radio One from those who have been employed by them (and are) does not give me great desire to seek a position with that organization.

Black people in Black radio are killing it. We've abandoned what made it great by mimicking the mistakes and weaknesses of large radio broadcasting corporations. Of course it's a business, but it should also be "a calling".

One of the biggest trends that the FCC flags as important in the report is the loss of what it calls “accountability” journalism, in which news outlets on a local and/or national level cover the government and thereby act as a check on power...

And what does the FCC think can be done to fill it? Not much. As the report notes, it’s not clear how that kind of journalism — which doesn’t tend to attract much advertising interest — is supposed to pay for itself on an ongoing basis...

...media companies need to adapt to the new shape of the industry, and try to learn from alternative models and businesses. Probably the biggest move it recommends is that the government shift some of the $1 billion or so it spends on advertising its own services to smaller and/or alternative news sources, as a way of helping media outlets on the revenue side.

FCC report on media warns of decline in quality local news

Local TV is singled out in the report for not covering important issues enough. Alhough the number of hours of local news has increased over the last few years, too few stations "are investing in more reporting on critical local issues," the report said. Furthermore, the report said that although stations may be adding newscasts, they are doing it with fewer reporters.

Even with the additional newscasts, the stories often focus on crime and the reason for that has more to do with with how cheap it is to cover crime stories than it does viewer demand.

"As technology offered consumers new choices, it upended traditional news industry business models, resulting in massive job losses," the FCC said.

The result has been "gaps in coverage that even the fast-growing digital world has yet to fill." Although the digital media may someday can fill the void left by diminishing traditional media, "at this moment the media deficits in many communities are consequential."

An Introduction to Kernel Patch Protection

The kernel is the lowest-level, most central part of a computer operating system and one of the first pieces of code to load when the machine starts up. The kernel is what enables the software of the machine to talk to the hardware and is responsible for basic OS housekeeping tasks such as memory management, launching programs and processes, and managing the data on the disk. All applications and even the graphical interface of Windows run on a layer on top of the kernel. The performance, reliability, and security of the entire computer depend on the integrity of the kernel.

The kernel is the most carefully coded piece of the entire operating system. Since all other programs depend upon it, a glitch in the kernel can make all other programs crash or perform unexpectedly. You're probably also familiar with the term, "Blue Screen of Death" (BSoD). This is the result of an error in the kernel or in a driver running in the kernel that is so severe that the system can't recover from it. The BSoD is bad, so we want to do everything we can to keep customers from seeing it. One of the ways we can do that is to maintain the integrity of the kernel by restricting what software is allowed to run in and interact with it.

Framing Innocence: A Mother's Photographs, a Prosecutor's Zeal, and a Small Town's Response tells the story of...

Cynthia...a passionate photographer, particularly of her favorite subject: Nora. In the years since her daughter's birth, Cynthia had shot, cataloged, and stored in her cramped dining room more than 35,000 pictures. She hoped to someday publish a photojournalistic account of her family's life. But her most ardent mission was to give her daughter a photographic memory of her childhood.

Nora's childhood changed irrevocably one July day when a film-processing lab sent a roll of Cynthia's prints, including snapshots of Nora in the bathtub, to the police. When she had shot them, Cynthia hadn't thought twice about those pictures, which were a sequence of her daughter bathing and rinsing off with a handheld shower sprayer. The police and county prosecutors, however, looked at the pictures and saw a child performing a sexual act. They indicted Cynthia on two felony charges. My friend's father died today. Lots of thoughts came to my mind...

In a sense, now, he probably feels alone. He's not currently in a relationship. His mother is not alive.

His father's health had been declining. So, as this outcome was logically expected, it was very tough on my friend. In our conversations I noticed the pressures he was under. As much as I could, I tried to be available for him...which, in my opinion, hasn't been enough: I haven't been able to "help myself", therefore I haven't been able to provide a lot of help to others. I have been unemployed for over four years, have no transportation, and don't have my own residence.

Before his father died, I asked my friend if he and his parents/father had conversations that needed to be before it's too late to have them...if all that should be said has been. A lot of those conversations never happen for people. I have never met my father (Franz Ray). I have been trying to locate and contact him, and any siblings and other relatives I have. I fear my father will die before we get to meet and talk...

By their choice, I have estranged relationships with some of my children. Because I've been told that's what they truly want, I'm OK with that. There are some members of your family you will never be friends with, and some friends you consider "family".

A few years ago I lost a friend by the name of Wally. In a very short amount of time, he and I came to be very close. (We both liked to joke and be silly, and were not "polically correct"...especially to eachother.) Wally had trouble with alcohol. We had talked about it...he had been in rehab...lost his job...needed to have a breathalizer installed in his vehicle. It seemed he drank when he was alone, and lonliness had a lot to do with him drinking, so I had hoped we could find a place together...work together and build a (production) company...get some (radio) gigs. The booze got to him before I could.

I had a couple of friends who were married. There were problems in their marriages, and they were able to work through them and stay together. Something I envy.

Whether you know me or not, this is a message and warning to all: I don't want anyone to regret when/if they had an opportunity to...interact...with someone, but chose not to because of pride, stubborness, promises/oaths, fear, and other reasons that "prove your point" or causes you to "win the fight/arguement/confrontation". Is it truly important? If so, and you can live with your decision for the rest of your life, only you know what's best for you. If not...if there is any slight chance of doubt...it might/could haunt you for the rest of your life, and that of other members of your family.

I've experienced that a lot of things have been said, but not meant...or, not meant "forever". Because I have never liked to be picked-on, teased, and "played-with"...I've taken what has been said to me with great seriousness. Maybe sometimes too serious, but some people joke and "play" too much...they don't know when to stop. Some have tried to manipulate people (and me) with words and emotions. So, those experiences has pushed me to the other extreme: you say it, I tend to respond as it was presented. I've been told to leave, but when I did, they complained that I left. It's been said to me, "I will kick your ass"...so, I planned to strike first. It's been said to me, "I'll kill you"...so, I made plans to do so to them before they do so to me. She said she wanted a divorce, so I planned for it...and later learned she said it to get a response from me (to get me to "fight" for the marriage...all that did was to confuse me). I don't believe in supporting stress and "drama" in relationships.

Say what you mean/mean what you say, spend time with those you want to, get to know those you want to know, love (and show love to) those who love you...BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.

During that interview, Governor Brewer downplayed the effectiveness of bone marrow transplants.

BREWER: Bone marrow transplants we still cover, if it is a donor given from the -- from the family, meaning that, if your sister would donate the marrow to you, because it's more of a successful rate.

Those that are outside generally, according to our records, we have that 14 bone marrow transplants have been utilized, and 13 of those people did not successfully live long afterwards.

So, you know, these are difficult decisions.

...Liver transplants are not fully covered under the new system. The patient who died last week, for instance, was denied funding for a transplant because he had hepatitis C.

...transplant groups say they use outdated, even faulty data.

For instance, lung transplants were cut out entirely because Arizona's version of Medicaid said data showed the surgery did not extend life expectancy. According to USTransplant.org, though, which provides the national report card for all major organ transplants, about 66 percent of patients survive at least three years after having the transplant.

...Representatives at transplant programs at four Arizona hospitals wrote her offering cost-cutting measures.

Democratic state lawmakers have suggested dipping into federal stimulus money, $30 million, they say, but they say Governor Brewer has been vague about how much, if any, of that money is left. Some has already gone to fixing the roof on a rarely-used coliseum.

And enough money has been spent on algae research to fund the transplant program two times over. Five families dropped from the transplant list, they have gotten so fed up, they launched a Web site to show just how much money is out there. They say they have identified $2.1 million for Arizona's portion of the settlement with AIG, $6 million in unclaimed lottery prizes, and get this, $1.25 million left over from a recently canceled project to build a bridge to save 250 squirrels, not people, squirrels.

Earlier, I spoke with Arizona Senate Minority Leader David Schapira. He calls Governor Brewer a one-person death panel, also Douglas Gravagna, who needs a heart transplant, was a candidate under Arizona's Medicaid program until the rules were changed.

COOPER: Senator-elect Shapira, I mean, the governor has asked for ideas on how to make up the budget shortfall. She now seems sort of open to ideas.

But the governor's spokesperson released a statement yesterday that reads in part -- quote -- "The minority leader has yet to produce a single proposal to resolve Arizona's massive Medicaid deficit, only this empty rhetoric."

Have there been proposals submitted to the governor?

DAVID SCHAPIRA (D), ARIZONA STATE SENATOR-ELECT: Well, I think one thing that is interesting, the governor has a serious timing issue on this issue. And -- and -- and, in this particular case, I'm -- I'm not the minority leader. I won't be until Monday. I'm not even a sworn-in state senator yet. And so, you know, they're coming out criticizing saying that, for the last year, they have been asking me, when the -- the minority leader they may be referring to is someone who passed away actually a few months ago.

I actually, even though I'm not sworn in as minority leader, have already presented multiple proposals to them. And, in fact, our caucus will introduce a bill on Monday that will offer up just one of those many proposal.

COOPER: What are some of the other proposals?

SCHAPIRA: I mean, there's lots of things that we can do. The one that we will be offering up Monday, in Arizona, we have an accounting credit where, for retailers like myself, if you file your sales tax on time, you get basically a gift from the state, saying thank you for filing on time. That's -- that's about $10 million. That would -- about eight times as much as the cost of this transplant program.

COOPER: What about the stimulus funds?

COOPER: Because the governor's office says it's all accounted for. But -- but you think there's another $30 million that could be used for these transplants, right?

SCHAPIRA: Well, the governor has publicly announced all but $30 million of the stimulus money, of -- of how she plans to spend the stimulus money. We did a public records request. And basically she said to us that the $30 million's been spent.

And in the public records request, she kind of generically said, this much money for public safety, this much money for counties and the cities. Those checks haven't been written. And I can't think of -- I can't think of anything more important than -- than restoring funding for these transplants.

The event will end with a cocktail event for both CPR1 and CPR2 attendees to continue to celebrate this important industry movement.

How to syndicate a radio show, "Coast to Coast" (book review)

I've always been a super-supporter of radio stations broadcasting local content. Not that I'm against (some) national programs. For me, there has always been more opportunity for creativity when there is feedback from a nearby audience...as I write this I'm reminded of how when on stage an audience can enhance the performance, rather than when being on camera in a studio (with no audience) and having the show broadcast to affiliates.

That said, after years of preparing and targeting my shows to a specific geographic audience...because of the very sad state of lack of management in broadcasting who have love for the medium...I have become agreeable to consider having my performances syndicated. (Because of the lack of vision in the industry, I have come to appreciate the openess of the internet. And I enjoy that I am responsible for what I choose to do, and choose to not do.)

Shit My Dad Says, book review

"...Justin Halpern...his seventy-three-year-old dad....who is "like Socrates, but angrier, and with worse hair," has never minced words, and when Justin moved back home, he began to record all the ridiculous things his dad said to him..."

Introduction, page "x":

"...all day long I dealt with people...who never really said what they were thinking. The more time I spent with my dad...the more grateful I started to feel..."

In the beginning of the book we learn of the events that led to the creation of the Twitter account, the book, and the television show.

Throughout the book are examples of his father expressing himself as thoughts come to him...stream of consciousness commenting, if you will.

The more of the book I read, the more I laughed. Loudly. Many times...

This is a book that can be read for short periods of time. It's great for those times when you have a break in the action. But, not if you're in areas where you need to be quiet and maintain control over outbursts: it may cause moments of grinning and laughing.

book review - Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things

Overall, the book contains stories about the experiences that the writers had with hoarders. From observations, to attempts at treatment. And there is A LOT of great information that will enlighten and educate about hoarding, and those who hoard.

On the inside cover/jacket of the book:

"Think about the one thing you own that you would grab first in a fire. Now imagine feeling that strongly about every single possession...

"...piles on on sofas and beds that make the furniture useless, homes that have to be navigated by narrow 'goat trails', stacks of paper..."

I know a person like this...and have known them for decades...

What is the definition of a hoarder? Throughout the book some reasonable parameters are given for consideration...

On page 100:
"The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders...lists hoarding as one of eight symptoms of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD)...it defines hoarding as 'the inability to discard worn-out of worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value'."

On page 50:
"...The difference between people who hoard and those who don't is in the valume and variety of things they view as 'useful'. For example, one elderly hoarder saved the labels from cands and jars of food to use as stationary."

On page 58:
"..Hoarding is not defined by the number of possessions, but by how the acquisition and management of those possessions affects their owner. When hoarding causes distress or impairs one's ability to perform basic functions, it has crossed the line into pathology...

"...people with hoarding problems fill the space they are living in regardless of the size or number of storage units they have. We have seen clients who own four or five houses. When they fill one house, the move on to another and fill it in short order...The more space they have available, the more space they fill..."

And, some guidelines on how to differentiate between hoarders and "collectors"...

Page 239:
"..Perhaps the best way to make the distinction between hoarding and normal collecting is to determine whether the behavior creates a problem for the family..."

And on page 267, it is said that true hoarding fouls "living spaces".

Which is what I've considered to be a reasonable parameter of whether a hoarder needs to make changes: for me, it's not the amount of items that they keep, and I don't always care about neatness...but dirt and filth accumulation that is unhealthy is unacceptable.

I have never seriously considered how people (can) become hoarders. But it appears that other situations that can cause people to have other issues and problems, can contribute to this as well.

Page 34:
"...In several recent studies, people with hoarding problems recalled disconnected relationships with their parents, particularly their fathers."

Page 197:
"...Our recent research indicates that an abscence of warmth, acceptance, and suport characterizes the early family life of many hoarders, perhaps leading them to form strong emotional atachments to possessions."

And on page 88:
"...One study showeed that hoarders who experienced traumatic events had more severe hoarding problems than those who were not exosed to trauma..."

Throughout their lives, some hoarders have developed better relationships with things than with people: things may not have disappointed them as much as people...things don't yell, lie, change their moods, and hurt their feelings.

In the book it is exposed that those with tendencies to hoarding animals may be using the relationships with animals to substitute for, or replace, potential and/or former relationships with people.

Returning to the consideration of abuse, on page 87:
"...When describing their reactions to someone else discarding one of their belongings, a number of our clients have said, 'It feels like I've been raped'. It is possible that in some people, hoarding mght develop as a response to severe trauma..."

Page 55:
"...Most burglary victims feel that they have been violated, and many women liken it to being raped."

Some characteristics of hoarders include: perfectionism, indecision, and powerful beliefs about...and attachment to...objects.

Research has found that those as a child who prefer symmetry (of which I am guilty), and have arranging compulsions, can be similar to to those with hoarding problems. A desire for symmetry and arranging, and hoarding, all have to do with physical objects...

Those who have attention deficit problems, and attention deficity hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), can also be possible candidates to become hoarders.

The mind of hoarders also tends to be more "busy"...

Page 211:
"...We have noticed an inordinate number of hoarders who describe themselves as artists. This might be because hoarders are more intelligent or creative than the rest of us, their worlds filled with an appreciation of the physical world that most of us lack. This part of hoarding is a kind of giftedness, a special talent for seeing beauty, utility, and meaning in things.

"But along with this gift comes a curse...an overabundance of information paired with an inability to organize it...Maybe hoarding is creativity run amok."

And, on the negative side, so to speak: "...Depression is a common affliction amoung hoarders..." (page 38)

Page 231:
"...people with this problem are less likely to marry, and when they do, they are more likely to get divorced...

"...many hoarders live without spouses: no one wants to live with all that stuff..."

Some hoarders may not have suffered consequences that will cause them to address the issue, and cease hoarding. That includes being abandoned by family members and spouses.

Children of hoarders suffer as much, if not more, than the hoarders. They try to hide the issue from others: friends, family members, etcetera. And when they have shared the secret, those to whom it has been exposed to have developed a negative view of the child. As well as the child's family, and the child's life in general.

"...Children who lived in a hoarded home before the age of ten were more embarrassed and less happy, had fewer friends...and had more strained relations...strained relationships...more hostile..." (page 227)

I was surprised to learn that there are support groups for the children of hoarders...one called Children of Hoarders (http://www.childrenofhoarders.com).

The book mentions some of the groups for hoarders, which are:
Messies Anonymous
Clutterless Recovery Groups
Clutterers Anonymous
and Overcoming Hoarding Together (http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/H-C/)

The good news is that...
"Even if hoarding is inherited or driven by problems in the wiring of the brain, people with hoarding problems do seem to be able to learn to control them..." (page 214)

But, sometimes hoarders need to be forced to dispose of items. And in other situations, the items need to be removed by others. However, major changes can cause enough personal distress to an individual that...they die:
"...In 2007, the nantucket, Massachusetts, Health Department abandoned forced cleanouts when three consecutive hoarders died shortly after being returned to their cleaned-out homes..." (page 147)

There are reports from some hoarders that consuming marijuana has dimished their tendancies. (Those that are bigoted against marijuana won't want to hear that, nor accept it, because it's another positive benefit that it can provide...)

There are issues in societies that may have contributed to hoarding.

Page 262:
"...an American culture of materialism and overconsumption and defined 'afluenza' as a contagious social affliction in which possessions take over our lives, and drain us of the very thngswe seek by acquiring them.

"...we may own the things in our homes, but they own us as well...Possessions orginally sold on the promise that they would make life easier and increase leisure tie have done just the opposite..."

Page 264:
"...materialism...Fromm...Possessions play a central role in the lives of materialists. They are a means to self-enhancement, identity, and social standing, and the driving force in daily activities. Materialists expect possessions...to make them happy. Ironically, possessions seem to do the opposite...materialistic people are less satisfied with their lives and less happy than people without such an orientation toward 'having'..."

When my third ex-wife and I were moving out of our apartment, she offered to allow me to store some of my belongings in a storage facility that she had rented. I have never felt the need to pay for storage. Most of my life, if I could not have something with me...or care for it...I have not tried to obtain, and keep, it. I've never been able to afford to invest in a house, furniture, a new vehicle, or jewelry so I have been spared the burden of owning too many things. And that experience has also contributed to my accepted philosophy of only trying to keep that which I need to survive. I've become accustomed to being a fan of public transportation and bicycles. Most of my life has been very spartanisque...

I recommend this book for those that know hoarders. And, this book should be given to hoarders...

Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Things

review - AKG Perception 120 USB Microphone

I had an opportunity to try a Perception 120 USB microphone from AKG. It's their first USB microphone. And (per their website) "the only USB microphone with an integrated analogue-to-digital converter with 24-bit and 128x oversampling. Instead of usual one-chip-solutions..."

Their manual states: "The Perception 120 USB microphone has a cardioid polar pattern...The microphone should be 20 to 40 cm (8 to 16 inch) from the speaker's mouth in order to obtain the best results." A pop filter is integrated into the microphone.

A tripod table stand, swivel mount, and 14.5 foot long USB cable are included with it.

The microphone supports Microsoft's Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Apple's Mac operating systems. "The computer operating system detects the microphone and automatically installs the device driver." It did: I plugged it into a computer that had Windows Vista installed, and the blue LEDs at the two switches on the microphone glowed.

The attenuation selector switch "enables you to increase the control limit by 20 dB to enable distortion-free recording of very loud sound sources and in close proximity to sound sources" to attempt to reduce distortion.

"The switchable bass-cut provides additional distortion reduction...The bass-cut also counteracts the proximity effect that can occur when the microphone is only a short distance (less than 15 cm) from the sound source."

Included in the box, that gave me a little thrill...because I always like to get "toys"...was a 4 by 4 inch sticker of the AKG logo. That's always a nice little extra something to give to people...that's a great idea.

Court records obtained by E! News show that Montana Fishburne...was arrested last year for alleged prostitution and only avoided jail by signing up for a work-alternative program.

On March 19, Fishburne pleaded no contest in a Hollywood courtroom to criminal trespass, a misdemeanor, and the court agreed to drop charges of solicitation and loitering in a public area for the purpose of prostitution, according to court documents.

She was sentenced to two years' probation and 15 days in jail, but was able to do community service instead of jail time.

As part of her probation, Fishburne was also ordered to not charge (or attempt to charge) money for sex; have sex in a public place or a place "exposed to public view"; hitchhike or otherwise engage drivers in conversation; and loiter in alleys or public streets "with the intent to solicit acts of prostitution."

DirecTV NASCAR "HotPass"

I noticed there was a new message in the "Caller ID & Messages" area of the DirecTV service about "HotPass". Yesterday, I caught the end of it...a good idea, but not a great experience.

On the HotPass channels you can watch the race from cameras installed in some of the NASCAR vehicles.

The channels are free...from what I have read, they were not in 2007 and 2008.

I did not like watching it on a television that had a 19-inch screen: it was too small for me to comfortably enjoy the views.

And changing the channel from one to another was unsatisfying: it took too long...there were a couple of seconds of pause, and dark/blank screens, to get from one to the other.

For people who have large screen televisions, there should be a "HotPass Mix" channel where all four of the views from the cars can be seen on one channel.

Take note of the system requirements: initially I installed the software on a computer that did not have a comparable processor, and noticed the software seemed to fail to modify the audio enough for reasonable use on that computer.

I have not tried a external speaker system with the software. When using the software with the speakers on my Alienware Area 51 M9750 notebook computer, I was able to make the audio cleaner and clearer. Using Sony MDR-CD180 and SteelSeries Siberia headphones is when I best experienced the features the SRS software had to offer...using the Advance Controls allowed me to get the best performance possible from the headphones.

If you often use a computer to listen to music for enjoyment, this software can make it a much better experience.

{UPDATE...AFTER I HAD WRITTEN THE PREVIOUS}

I had disabled the software from loading at boot. After restarting my computer I noticed no audio would play. In the Sound properties, I found a "SRS HD Audio Lab" playback device had been added and was enabled. I enabled "Speakers" (in an attempt to bypass the SRS software), but was not able to engage sound.

After looking at some of the other software I have installed, I suspect there may be a conflict between the SRS HD Audio Lab...and the Realtek HD Audio Manager that was provided with the computer: when I disable the SRS software, it no longer interacts with the Realtek software...probably causing no audio between the two applications.

As a listener, and as a broadcaster, I've always preferred (what I consider to be) a balancing of the elements.

No long commerical breaks...I don't like to have more than three commercials in a break. And, I like to have something quick between the second and third commericial: promo something that's upcoming, whether it's somthing that ahead within a few minutes or a few hours...

No long breaks with too many elements (promos, commercials, bits, etcetera)...

And try to play two or three songs before stopping for an exented period of time ("break").

I have no problem with the "song, commercial, song, commercial & programming element, song, commercial" format...it just needs to be properly, and comfortably, executed.

Being a fan of radio is what made me want to work in radio...these are the things that seemed to be great and attractive formatics and procedures.

Especially the "Star Trek 2-Disc Special Edition", know that the digital copy being offered might not be on the disc you are purchasing: you may need to download it. If you can...

AFTER I opened the (Star Trek) package and inserted a DVD, I was offered a "Transfer to iTunes" option. When I chose that, I was required to have an Apple ID. Which, due to previous purchases from iTunes, I have.

After logging in, (as has happened before) I was unable to proceed past the "Payment Method section"...because I don't have a credit card (and any funds in my PayPal account). So, I can't get my digital copy from the iTunes store.

iTunes has often dissappointed me. Whenever I've attempted to download free content, like the "Free Single of the Week", I find that I could not (because I cannot get past the "Payment Methond" section).

At the moment, due to a gift card I had received, I have over $26 of active credit in my iTunes account.

And NOW, I find I can't log into iTunes with my Apple ID...AND my AOL Screen Name.

The one that was sent to me is the "RedPOM: Red classic sports car wireless mouse"...

A carrying pouch is provided, which has an inner sleeve for spare batteries. The batteries are installed in the trunk, and the USB receiver can also be stored there. There is energy saving technology so when the mouse isn't in use, it will hibernate. When the batteries need to be changed, the headlights flash...

On their webpage it states it has the "worlds’ smallest 2.4 GHz USB receiver": I measured it as 3/4 of an inch (19 mm) long...and once it is inserted into a USB port, 1/2 of an inch (12.5 mm) of the receiver extends from the computer.

Sensitivity settings on one model can be set at 400, 800, or 1600 DPI...but I received the model locked to 1200 DPI (its settings cannot be changed).

The scroll wheel feels GREAT! It's 31/64 of an inch (12 mm) wide, made of rubber...and is very comfortable.

Ahem...Father's Day is June 20.

Before using the FD-47, they recommend the following procedure to obtain a baseline:

1. Fill the fuel tank...
2. Record the mileage on the odometer...log it as "Mileage A"
3. Drive until the tank is less than half full.
4. At the same filling station, using the same pump as before (because pumps can be differently calibrated), fill the tank ...log how many gallons it takes to fill the tank.
5. Record the mileage as "Mileage B"...
6. Subtract Mileage A from Mileage B (which will give the amount of miles driven)...
7. Divide your answer by the number of gallons it took to fill the tank...this will give the a baseline miles-per-gallon figure.

To begin logging the amount of fuel that might be saved by using the FD-47:
8. Now, plug in the FD-47 (and drive the car until the tank is less than half full)...
9. Fill the tank at the same station using the same pump...log how many gallons it takes to fill up the tank.
5. Record the mileage as "Mileage C"...
6. Subtract Mileage B from Mileage C...
7. Divide your answer by the number of gallons of fuel most recently put in the tank.

If the FD-47 saves fuel, you might notice the difference in miles driven before using the FD-47...and those that were while using the FD-47.

Initially, this began as me testing some software that will allow for the recording from chat software...which I may later post a review of: so far, I've found interaction of the software to be a little "iffy".

When on-air, and off-air, this is how Robert and I interact in our personal lives...and have for decades.

In the event that a vehicle failure does occur, AAA advises motorists to adhere to the following emergency roadside plan:

Turn on four-way flashers and pull completely off the roadway, if possible. On a freeway/highway, use the nearest exit, if possible. If unable to exit, pull the vehicle to the far right side of the roadway, on the right side of the solid, white line. Do not pull into, or stop in the gore area, which divides the roadway from the exit.

If you’re unable to exit the roadway, stay in your vehicle and remain buckled. Call AAA or your emergency roadside provider.

If you feel that you are in danger, let the dispatcher know immediately. Or, if your vehicle is stopped on the travel portion of the roadway, call 911.

Know your location in order to expedite help. Pay attention to the last exit if on a freeway, mile markers or signs, and your direction of travel.

Stay with your vehicle at all times, so long as it is safe to do so.

I didn't want to burn/waste a CD, so I just tried the USB version...I needed a USB drive that was at least 80 MB.

After putting the AVG Rescue CD on a USB drive, I booted from the USB drive. The AVG Rescue CD GNU/Linux Boot Menu has eight options (which can be seen at the AVG Rescue CD Guide. Two of the eight available options I found interesting are: Memtest86+ and "exit to the Syslinux boot prompt").

The USB drive that was sent to me did not work with a one-foot (USB) extension cord: the USB drive must be connected directly to the computer.

Based on my past experiences with USB flash drives that contained U3 and Ceedo software, I assumed that when I connected the drive to my computer...I would be able to immediately use the software directly from the drive; the software needed to be installed, and I did not want to install the software to the computer I was using.

I chose a different computer to install it on for testing. I have nothing unusual to report about it...the installation of the software was as normal as any.

I decided to try to install the software from the USB stick, into the USB stick.

The "2 GB" USB memory stick had a total of 1.86 GB of usable space, and 243 MB was being used (by the installation software that was provided is on the drive).

(Using a different computer than the one I installed the software onto) I installed the software onto the USB stick (to "{driveletter}:\Program Files\Riverdeep\"). Now 583 MB of space is being used. As I assumed would happen, icons were installed on the computer by default (because the installation procedures do not give options to not install them).

I disconnected the USB drive from the computer, restarted the computer, and (in Windows Vista) "uninstalled" the programs from Programs and Features.

Using the best computer I have (an Alienware Area 51 M9750), I connected the USB flash drive to the port on the right side of the computer...and the drive was not recognized. I don't have this issue with other USB drives...

I connnected the USB drive to a port on the left side of the computer, and it was mounted. The programs will now run from the USB flash drive (just launch their executable files from within the folders of the installed programs).

In the 1980s, I worked as a DJ in 7 topless bars...7 days a week, two clubs a day. The money was GREAT! We (the employees) had A LOT of fun...I do miss it. (Yeah...there was "drama", too. It was one of those situations where you take the good with the bad...)

I don't know what happened to the industry, but I noticed dancers quit "dancing"...they pose. And they don't (even pretend to try to) entertain. And they complain...to everyone, including the customers...when they don't make the money they feel they're entitled to. Remember you are no different than anyone else in the "entertainment" business: perform your art, and if there is enough of an audience for it, you might be able to earn a living from it. If you are failing at the business of entertainment, maybe you're not doing good business.

I'm ready for pole dancing to be an Olympic sport!...

It gets off to a great start...the first text message is interesting and entertaining. All of the entries are good, until the fourth page...where one caused me to laugh out loud.

Some of the entries were educational. For example, I've seen "happy trails", but never knew that was the name for them...

Some of the content is for adults , and very graphic...and very funny!

Since it consists of text messages, this book is great for those moments when you have nothing to do and some time to kill: you can begin to read it , and stop, at anytime.

With only 192 pages, this book will fit in a pocket (8.26 x 5.23 inches). And there are eBook formats.

new Polaroid 300 instant camera (review)

Public relations agency Weber Shandwick sent a few books to me (see my posts at http://theslickshow.blogspot.com/2010/05/private-views-book-reveiw.html and http://theslickshow.blogspot.com/2010/05/power-of-invisible-sun-book.html), and one of the new Polaroid 300 Instant Cameras to try...

I've used Polaroid cameras since the 1960s, and I'm not ashamed to say it. There are things in life you experience and they leave a very positive impression on you that lasts your lifetime. Old cameras are one of them. They were...are...one of those neat pieces of technology that feels as good today as it did then.

The Polaroid 300 is available in three colors: black with grey, blue with gray, and red with white (the one I received). Four AA batteries were included, as was a wrist strap (which was a little tricky to attach but, then again, aren't they all?). To power-on the camera, and to open the lens cover (nice), the lens is pulled-out and away from the camera. There are lamps to show if the camera is ready to take a picture, and to give you an idea if the batteries need to be replaced. If the camera is on and not used after about five minutes, it will go into an "energy saving state". There are four lighting settings: "clear" for when outside in bright sunshine, "fine" for when it is fair or there are thin clouds overhead, cloudy, and a setting for when indoors. Plus, there is an automatic flash. The size of the pictures are 2.1 by 3.4 inches (the size of a business card); the image size is 1.8 by 2.4 inches.

After inserting the film package, my first attempt at taking a picture failed because the cover was in place (on the film cartridge)...it is removed by the camera after the trigger is pressed.

My next/"first" shot was taken outdoors...but, I did not have the lighting/scene setting correct: by default, when the camera is on, the lighting/scene setting is at "indoor"...every time you power-on the camera you will need to check the lighting setting before you take a picture.

Below:
The shirt of the subject of the top-left shot is purple, but seems faded. In the middle-right picture, they are staggered at about 10, and the other 20, feet away: the picture is out of focus, and has no clarity. The closer your subjects are to the camera, the better the shot will be. (The two bottom pictures were taken indoors with no lights on: just the flash was used.)

The two below were taken in a hallway, first with no light, and then with the light that was available (very low and poor).

I tried to remember the best uses I had heard of for instant cameras and all I could remember were that some people kept them in vehicles to document collisions and the like. But: "...instant cameras were found to be useful for other purposes such as ID cards, passport photos, ultrasound photos, and other uses which required an instant photo. They were also used by police officers and fire investigators because of their ability to create an unalterable instant photo..."

So, I took one of a car (see above) as if I were attempting to document some damage.

I do miss the old large format/size of the pictures...the "40 Series" was 3.25 by 4.25 inches (83 by 108 mm). Photographs of that type of the generation before mine exist in the possession of members of my family.

I hope Polaroid considers creating a hybrid camera: one that could produce instant prints...AND take digital shots. (And, if they do, I hope I get some cameras and film for suggesting this idea...)

Private Views, book reveiw

(This is the first post of three regarding a package I received from a public relations agency that contained promotional material for projects they represent.)

The name of the book is "Private Views"...

"In the early 1980s, photographer Barbara Crane embarked on a photographic project shot during Chicago's various summer festivals. Armed with a Super Speed Graphic camera and Polaroid film, Crane waded in close to the revelers and focused on capturing the details of clothing and hairstyles, but most important, gesture. The images are tightly cropped and terrifically alive, viscerally bringing us into the crush of people eating, drinking, and enjoying the crowd dynamic—an incredible inventory of private gestures performed in public spaces."

Crane is professor emeritus of photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. And represented by: Stephen Daiter Gallery, Chicago; Higher Pictures, New York; and Galerie François Paviot, Paris.

The first thing I noticed about the book is how regal it appears due to the binding and texture of the cover...it feels as if a fine nettish material has been embedded on to, and into, it. It's a great looking "coffeetable" book.

Halfway through the book, the first picture that caused me to pause and contemplate it, is one of a man using his forearm crutches. He is framed from his chest to his knees. I immediately began to wonder about the subject:

who is he?

why is he using crutches?

was it due to an accident?

does he have some disease?

how old is he?

After enjoying the aforementioned picture, I slowed my browsing. The next one I paused for is of two people...being show from their chest to their waists...warmly and affectionately holding each other around their waists. (It caused me to be reminded of how I would embrace my ex-wife. It's a good memory, and something I greatly enjoyed doing...which is why I was stopped in my browsing of the book by this picture.)

There are some shots that contain the faces of the subjects, but it is clear that the focus is on the body language of those in the pictures.

9 to 5: Days in Porn, review

I received a "screener" before the DVD will be available to the public.

From their website:

"...It’s a documentary that gives you an inside look into the world of porn by portraying the lives of 10 people from the industry that we spent over a year getting to know."

It was completed in July 2008 so, based on some time frames given throughout the documentary, I assume the filming began around January of 2007. (Keep that in mind as you read about the "newcomer" below...)

Most of the adult businesses are based in California in the San Fernando Valley...also known as "Porn Valley". Since the 1970s it has become the place from which most of the product available in the United States of America has roots. The documentary covers: the companies that produce pornography, the distributors of the product, the producers, the agents, the actors, and the directors.

A husband and wife who are both actors are followed, as well as some who are new to the business and those who have been around since the '70s.

I was very interested in what veterans of the industry had to say...their experiences, suggestions, etcetera...so that I can compare that with those who are currently in the business.

Sharon Mitchell was an adult actress for over twenty-five years, appeared in over two thousand movies, and performed as a dancer. After being attacked by a fan she became a Clinical Sexologist, obtained a doctorate in Human Sexuality, and is a certified counselor (specializing in STDs and Chemical Dependency). She also operates AIM Healthcare, a non-profit organization in Encino (California) that tests for STDs and provides counseling services for issues that are related to substance abuse.

Mitchell makes a point that those who participate in pornography are the misfits and renegades of society. (I agree. And believe that those who enjoy it probably can also wear those labels...)

Another veteran, Nina Hartley, gives her opinions about the business. And "newcomers" have their own opinions...

In this, Sasha Grey is "The Rookie": she began her career in 2006, and this documentary is being made before she became very popular and well known.

Her first agent, Mark Spiegler, is shown as he goes through his day of managing his talent; her at-the-time boyfriend...now fiance...Ian Cinnamon also expresses his thoughts and feelings.

Not surprising is that sisters have worked in the industry together, such as Mia and Ava Rose. To me they clearly love eachother, and Mia gains strength and feels comfortable having Ava around (when she was...you'll understand this comment when you see the scene I'm referring to).

I assume we all expect those who are related to this type of business will be discriminated against. But for someone to have their World of Warcraft account terminated shocked me! It appears to me that Blizzard/WoW was being nit-picky...after learning of her existance in their universe. (Porn stars need guilds, too...)

There's some conversation about the types of expectations that those who are inexeperienced in sexual activities (virgins, et alia) will have based on what they see in some productions. Will they consider what is seen as behavior(s) expected of them, and is considerd the norm? That's a good question.

Three major reasons are given that women work (as actresses) in the industry. As I remember, the reasons were given by Mitchell. I wish all participants in the documentary had been asked why they chose adult entertainment as a career...

There was mention of what actresses aren't warned about before they begin performing, and how some performers can be used and abused: used by agents, producers, etcetera. I wanted to know more about what had happened, and how they were swindled or taken advantage of. I'm sure others who might enter this field need to know this information, as well.

Working hard and planning financially for the future was mentioned, but not examined. Some idea is given about the amount of money that can be earned. But what I didn't learn about, that I'm very interested in, are those who properly managed their business for lifelong financial success:

How much did they make?

How often did they make certain amounts?

What did they do with the money after it had been received?

Who successfully provided for the future, and how did they do it?

If you've wondered what it's like to work in adult entertainment, or have thought about being in the business, this DVD is for you! There are very graphic scenarios, and they need to...and should...be included: the reality needs to be shown with no softening of the view.

Between segments music is played as if it's being broadcast on a radio station. KQDJ is the call sign that was given, but I believe it's fictional because I cannot find any information about it ever existing at the frequency that was announced.

As of the time of this posting, I did not find any information on their website about the music that was used, and where I can get more information on it. Maybe it will later be available...

The runtime is over 90 minutes.

Some take social networking MUCH too seriously

I'm on a roll! Two days is a row I've pissed-off two different people due to my posts on the internet. "Do I hear three?..."

The first "offense" was a comment I made to someone's post I intended as a joke, but...based on their response...I assume the subject matter I used hit much to close to home to something bad that may have happened in their life or to someone they care/cared a lot about. As I have posted before (somewhere...maybe here), I thought there were some who knew me well enough to know when I intend to offend. Because when I do, I plan to do my best to make it as obvious and painful as possible. But, oh well...live and (maybe) learn.

Next, I made a post on one of MY accounts that someone took offense to because...I believe...I referred to some quotes in the movie "Religulous" that were attributed to others (Benjamin Franklin, Thoms Jefferson, John Adams), and those comments do not support religion. (And the mixture of religion and government.) I suppose the person who commented on my post is..."passionate"...about his beliefs, and does not appreciate the movie (and Bill Maher). His comment alluded to I had accepted the quotes that were offered in the movie, and was just spreading the content. Before I made the post, I did look to see if I could verify the quotes: I found enough sources to feel that the texts were valid. Because how I was taken to task about my post, it is logical to expect that the commenter did not check to see if those quotes were false or accurate.

I am amazed at how it seems some don't take a breath, or two...or more...and respond more cordially than they do. And not just to me. With the written word, there are no extra cues that could give much more insight to the tone and context of a message...as if voice and visual were added to the package. Are you sure there's not a better way to respond than the way you are about to when you hit the "enter" key?

(I don't argue. I can't think of the last time I have. When I haven't , some have perceived it as a lack of interest. I have never had a constructive argument with anyone...ever. And I don't believe I have ever witnessed one. I'll have a passionate discussion, but that's as far as I'll go. "Mister Spock" is my hero. From the perspective of a martial artist, I love it when emotion and attitude allows me to have the advantage over others...)

Maybe I should just be thankful that someone has taken any interest in my expressions at all. Maybe.

I haven't read her first book ("Girl with a One-Track Mind: Confessions of the Seductress Next Door"), and wanted to before reading this one ("Girl With a One Track Mind: Exposed: Further Revelations of a Sex Blogger")...but was unable to get a copy. I asked Zoe if I should read the first book before the second...she said: "Not necessarily: each book stands on its own. But reading the first will give you something to compare against, however..."

She begins the book with a position that reads:

"...to get the no-holds-barred low-down on blokes and shagging...it's so nice to have a male friend...to whom I can put my explicit questions and to be able to converse about sex..."

That goes both ways. It's great to be able to bluntly speak with a woman about: what they/she likes and dislikes, and how they/she feels (physically and emotionally).

After reading a few posts, I became a little frustrated because I don't know what year she's writing in: she gives the month and date, but not the year. (But as I'll explain later, I was able to compose a timeline by matching the dates given in the book with other information...)

Reading her conversations with other women reminded me of a book I read in my late teens, around 1980, titled "How to Make Love to a Woman". That particular book will give young males some hints as to what women might be looking for...

To my surprise, she gives a bad review of the Rampant Rabbit adult accessory. I remember reading about it, and have known those who have purchased and used the device, but never been aware of someone who doesn't like it and its performance. I have known of one woman for whom it was not sturdy enough...she broke it. (The device I've read the most positive comments about is the "Magic Wand", though I've never personally known of a woman who has owned one.)

She mentions her concerns about having enough stamina to meet her expected upcoming encounter(s). I believe most guys find out "the hard way" that we can be outlasted by women. (I've developed a theory that...putting aside the morality of most people...due to they appear to enjoy and need more time during intimate encounters, women could best be served by two men at a time: tag-team titillation, if you will.)

A few more entries past the one regarding stamina...(to my surprise) she addresses the issue of two men and one woman! And, how for most it appears to be more taboo than two women and one man. Which leaves me a little confused, because...to me...morally it's the same difference. I guess it's more because of her preference (and not because of logistics and tactical analysis).

From her postings on her blog, and in her book(s), she has a message for women that I totally agree with: it is the responsibility of every woman to know what she likes, and how she wants to be pleasured...and not to be afraid to share that information. Every woman/person is different and prefers different things. I know of no one who can read minds, and very few that can correctly interpret and translate body language so...yes, ladies...it is greatly appreciated if you can make it as easy as possible for us (men) to know what buttons to push. There have been times when I wished a manual would have been provided before the first date.

On page 275, Zoe states what I just have in the previous paragraph: women need to know themselves, and also need to speak-up (so to speak)...

As I get halfway through this book, I begin to understand that the first half of it contains writings created before the first book was was published. And I find I am correct: I have now arrived to where Zoe is aware that someone knows that she is the author of her first book.

A newspaper uncovered who she is. And, if Zoe is correctly quoting a voicemail message she received on her telephone, they are threatening to print pictures of her that they have...but if she gives an interview they will allow her to pose for their photographer. I'm not surprised to find that the newspaper is owned by Rupert Murdoch...

What did surprise me was, in an e-mail message to Zoe, the publication will also identify her mother, and her mother's address (in addition to Zoe's address). Why? Why is this necessary? Sometimes you just want to get a baseball bat and...

I was able to find the article on the newspaper's website dated August 2006. (There was an earlier article reviewing the book July 2006.)

Because of all of the publicity, she loses her job (because the employer doesn't have the guts to stick by her).

Throughout the book Zoe mentions how she would rather her mother and father not read her (first) book and blog...which leaves me a bit sad for her parents (and her). Only because she says how great her realtionship is with her parents, my belief is that if it is (that great)...their relationships should be able to handle ANYTHING.

As I get towards the end of the book she focuses on her insecurities of having satisfying relationships now that men are aware of the content of her first book. For all of her confidence that we have been exposed to, she appears to (continue to) have flashes of a little regret and intrepidation. I imagine there are many men who would love the opportunity to get to know her to find if she can be the one for them...of course she would need to find them appealing to her, and her needs and desires. Life is a pain in that way, ain't it?...

Because of everything, Zoe has had three identities: Zoe--her family name, "Abby Lee"--her sex blogger name, and "Katie"--a name she has used when dating after the first book was released and she was "outed". I've done the same. Members of family (including my ex-wives) call me by the name my mother gave to me at birth, my nickname ("S!ick") was given to me in junior high school by a student and has carried-over into my professional life, and...when I've felt it necessary...I have created other third identities so I can express myself and not felt the need to filter the content. Like Zoe/"Abby", I have said and posted things that others (in my personal life) took offense to...some as if I were attacking them when all I was doing was honestly expressing how I feel and my position on issues, as well as feeling free to create content of my choosing. I have also felt the need for a facade to explore beliefs and preferences without being falsely accused of anything, and having misunderstandings applied to who I really am.

"Hurrah!", I say to Zoe Margolis/"Abby Lee" for having the courage to contribute to the culture of humankind. Maybe we all might learn a little something more about ourselves and eachother.

As I began to read the book, I remembered in my mid-teens I had been to a drag race in Albuquerque in the mid-1970s that featured "Hell On Wheels": the car had a tank-styled theme. And, my first stepfather had an audio album recording of drag racing sounds. That's right, and album of nothing but drag racing...

The book chronicles the experiences of a father and son who love racing and choose to own a team with the goal of participating in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). For all of their successes, there are many instances of overwhelming...and surprising examples of...lack of support from various types of people, white and black. Frustration is a constant theme within the book, as well as a love and passion for racing.

The negative responses from some Caucasians was not surprising. The described instances of unfulfilled agreements, and reneged commitments, greatly disturbed me. Those who said they were going to be helpful and abandoned Miller remind me of the phrase, "shooting oneself in the foot": they shot themselves in theirs (and shot Miller in his at the same time). There were potential sponsors that gave the impression they would participate, and never did. And major business organizations, and individuals, made commitments and did not honor them...but did attempt to take some credit for any glory and success that may have occurred.

If you like computers...any kind of computers...you might like the documentary "Welcome to Macintosh".

I found I like to put it on like background music...like a screensaver...hell, you could play it in a lobby or waiting room (for the same reason you would leave magazines).

There are additional interviews of those in the documentary...you can put them on and just relax, and do other things while they're on. (I did.)

"Making" contains one teaser, and three trailers...

"Photos" has pictures of old models, circuit boards, early drawings and sketches of what could have been. I wish each picture had a descriptive note so I knew what I was looking at...

and "Symbiosis" is more video of various models of Macintoshes.

The only thing I found strange was some "bleeping" of words that occurred. I wish there had not been that type of censoring.

Russel Honore has a book about disaster survival

I watched Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré (United States Army, now retired) on CNN commenting on the events of the earthquake in Haiti. I had taken great notice of his effectiveness during Hurricane Katrina; while I was watching the activities in Haiti that did, and did not, take place to help those suffering...I wondered why Honore was not put in charge of solving any problems THEY had.

As I looked around on the internet for information about his work in New Orleans, I found his website (http://generalhonore.com) and found that he has written "SURVIVAL: How a Culture of Preparedness Can Save Youand Your Family From Disasters"...he was kind enough to have a copy sent to me.

In the prologue he states: "...Louisiana disaster response was the province of Lieutenant General Robert Clark, commander of U.S. Fifth Army in San Antonio, Texas...I was...not as familiar with the state or the city..."

As thankful as I am that Honore was sent, I now have questions for his superiors: why was Clark not sent?

In the first chapter, he recounts his entry into to aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans. And, sets the foundation to understanding the limits of his authority in this manner.

This book needs to be read to try to understand why someone...anyone...did not come into New Orleans, kick-ass, and get the job done: overall, it's not "legal" to do so. Residents of Louisiana (and other states) need to understand laws that relate to them, and the relationship betweeen the federal government and the states: "There is a National Response Framework...There is no National Preparedness Plan for disasters."

At the beginning of Chapter 7, he states:

"...The myth about federal government failing to prepare for Katrina just does not pass muster.

"...not Bush or FEMA officials or me or the First Army staff--fully realized the destructive power contained in that huge mass of swirling winds...

"...we had to wait for the governor to make the request of FEMA, which then had to send the request to the Department of Defense...

"...the lead agencies for those sorts of things...come from the affected states..."

If you take a very close look at why certain types of assistance to Haiti was not provided as fast as some expected, it's for the same reason: Haiti has a government that must authorize the actions of others. Beaurocracies have their benefits...and their disadvantages.

The PBS program NewsHour considered the military's roles in disasters...

"Several federal laws limit the role U.S. soldiers can play inside the United States. The reconstruction-era Posse Comitatus Act of 1878 prohibits federal troops from acting in a domestic law enforcement capacity unless specifically authorized by Congress..."

In chapter 8, it struck me as funny (though not REALLY funny) that the Transportation Security Adminstration wanted to be able to screen people before they were allowed on planes to be evacuated from New Orleans...it appears that, in general, people were being screened as they were being evacuated from the area (and I suspect that some may have been taken into custody).

In the book, Honore states that when he wanted to speak with FEMA director Mike Brown, Honore was told that Brown was out to dinner and unavailable. (Go ahead...throw something. Preferably at "Brownie"...)

As I read this chapter I am reminded of my belief that we need more amateur radio operators. I have always wanted to be one but, due to time lack of money, never been able to get the license.

He discusses expectations of what could, and should, have been done. And which agencies (local/state/federal) could, and should, have done it. And which agency can, and cannot, by law. And is, and is not, trained for certain services. Many (including me) expected the federal government to step in and "save everyone". Had they done that, it could have cause the federal government to become completely and totally responsible for that action, and any issues (good and bad) caused by doing so.

Everyone (local/state/federal) has a part to play, and needs to play their position. It was the responsibility of the state of Lousiana to oversee and handle the Katrina situation...and if they could not, then ask for assistance from the federal government. So, at times, I guess being angry with the federal government can be too easy to do: I/we expect them to perform miracles...and therefore sometimes they can be the large, visible target.

And Honore reminds us that we are our own responsibility: don't expect the government...ANY government...to provide for us, and to protect us. If we do, we get what we get. If we get anything at all...

Page 196: "...being proactive can be an expensive proposition and state and local governments generally will not spend the money necessary to do it..."

In addition, throughout the book he reminds us that there are a lot of services that are not under the direct control of the agencies that is responsible to provide them: emergency drinking water is not stocked by government agencies, but contracted from companies...communications services are provided by companies to government, AND MILITARY, departments (if they have been paid for)...businesses that provide services to transport supplies may not be "open" when they are needed...

I received a copy of "End the Fed". It's written by Ron Paul, a member of the House of Representatives from Texas.

chapter 1

"In the United States, the central bank is the Federal Reserve, the instrument by which our money and credit are constantly manipulated..."

"I've written this book to explain why I think the system of Fed domination must come to an end..."

In chapter 2 he begins to explain the origins of the Fed.

As I am reading, I'm keeping in mind that his opinion is that the Fed has faults.

He states that the gold standard does not allow for credit without limits.

After going through the chapter, I realize that I didn't learn why the Fed exists "in plain English". Maybe it's because I haven't thoroughly studied finance. Early into this book, I'm ready to strongly suggest you take your time reading it so you can try to understand what is being presented and put it into perspective for yourself.

He recollects some of the financial history during the 1900s of the United States of America. Included is his perspective on money during his life. No matter how you feel about his postions, agree or disagree, to know the events and history of what helped to shape his feelings is interesting.

In chapter 4 he recalls the creation of the Gold Commission. Which I was not able to find a lot of information about on the internet...and that seemed very weird to me. Maybe when I get over to my branch of the local library...

Paul believes that "If...we had returned to our senses in 1981, the problems and grave dangers we now face could have been averted."

Chapter chapter 5, Conversations with Greenspan, is nice and meaty...he starts swinging hard:

"...Greenspan...visited the House Committee on Oversight and Reform...

"Most of his testimony was designed as an attempt to protect his reputation and to explain away his shortcomings a Federal Reserve Board chairman. His testimony was pathetic. He made the point that the computer programs that they were using to anticipate...problems were not well designed...

"History will show that Greenspan, during his years as Fed chairman...planted all the seeds of the finanacial calamity that erupted..."

As I went through the book, it caused me to have a lot of questions about finances and how the government perceives what is in our best interest. I will need time for study to try to answer all of the questions I now have about it all. There more I read, the more I want to pause and learn about...

This book is not difficult to understand. But unless you are involved in financial markets daily, you will need to take your time to understand what Paul is presenting.

I also intend to seek out other opinions of this book: they will be interesting, and might help me to formulate my own opinion that I can explain and fully support.

It's a great "coffee table book": 11 x 11 inches, 140 pages...

As I began to read the book, initially I felt hesitant to review it "too much": I immediately felt that the story of each individual would be unique. As mine is...

The pictures are gripping. I find myself closely studying the features of each person. I am intrigued. Then, I see the picture of someone whose facial features, in my opinion, look exactly as mine. And, I see that they are a member of the Blackfoot tribe...like I believe I am! I'm not sure what to do or think about that...

I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was when I read the statement from an African-American male who married a white woman...that his family had disowned him. I guess I can still be amazed that some could/would do that. (There are more of those incidents recounted in the book.) I was raised by my great-grandparents until I was nine years old. I don't remember if, when I was a child, I ever knew if there were any people who did not want me around. I suspect my great-grandparents, a White woman and Black man, did all they could to shield me from that. From my teenage years on, I remember incidents of others not wanting me around...

One woman profiled in the book stated that she has identified her heritage as "hybrid" on forms. I wish I had thought of that...I hope I can remember it.

During my formative years the difinitive and accepted term for the times was "Black". And that's what I became. I have nothing against the term African-American, other than it doesn't describe me: I am of African decent, but an American citizen. I can live with "American-African"...

Depending on who has said it, and how they meant it, I have accepted "Negro" as well as "Colored":

When I was in high school in West Germany, 1978-1979, I lived in a dormitory. I played American-style football on the school team. There was only one person I'm aware of who would allow some of us...who were Black...to stay with her on the weekends. I remember being prepared by some of my teamates as I walked to meet her for the first time: "...Now...you need to understand...she's an old white woman...kind of set in her ways...she don't mean no harm...Mrs. Case is just the way she is..."

Mrs. Case, a white woman, would feed us and make sure we were OK and safe. I don't know what her past is, but Mrs. Case described us as (her) "colored boys": "...my boys will be over this weekend...you know, my colored boys that stay with me." If you ever took the time to get to know Mrs. Case, you would realize that...this is the only way she ever knew and understood as to how refer to us. For whatever reason, she didn't use "black" on "negro". In her defense (which I will always be), maybe because (to her) those terms were demeaning/derogatory/antagonistic. Who knows why, and it doesn't matter why. I expect something in her past led her to use the terminology the way she did. We could tell by her actions that her use of the term "colored" was intended and meant to be used with much love and affection, and we accepted her support. We listened to her heart, and not her words...

(In an episode of Barney Miller, a character refers to Harris as "Colored". Yamana says: "I'm colored. He's black..." That was he first time I've ever heard someone Asian described that way. He's not wrong; until then, I never knew he was right.)

I proudly proclaim to be a "mutt". I can imagine it causes some distress for some of my family members, but it's the term that I am VERY comfortable with for myself. Sometimes my nose is cold and wet, I might bite, and when music makes me happy I will "wag my tail".

Like their daddy, I like to describe my kids as "a mess": they are Black, White, Italian, Jewish, Chinese, Philipino, Mexican, Native...and those are the ones I know of! (Including the kids...)

Sometimes I feel I need to have a doctorate to know what really is the absolute correct word to use in discussions like this. I shall always demand that the answer to the question of race be "human". After that, I need access to a dictionary, and a thesaurus...as well as an anthropologist.

As I look at the photographs in the book all I can think of is how beautiful these people are. Well...that and I'm trying to figure-out which of the women are single. (As if it might matter to me...)

I was thinking about who I wanted to share this book with, and inform about it. One thing I thought of that is kinda funny to me is that I'm beginning to feel a little sorry for some people in my life: "Oh...you poor thing...you're ONLY white...what a shame..."

I don't know enough about my lineage. I've never met my father, and I'm not absolutely sure about all of the different types of ancestors that I have evolved from. That situation will contiue to grow for humans in general: only with meticulous record keeping will some...and I expect it to be very few...be able to trace and detail from which their family came.

After receiving a copy of "Burying Don Imus: Anatomy of a Scapegoat", I received "The Cool Gent: The Nine Lives of Radio Legend Herb Kent" from the distributor.

As I began to read the preface, because I'm a radio personality, I immediately appreciated that the book is written as if he's reading it to me.

He states:

"...what this book you're holding is about--the story of a little guy who wanted to be on the radio since he was a whippersnapper, finally gets in, succeeds greatly, crashes, recovers, and rises to the top of radio again..."

(I have a huge feeling that this roller coaster-of-a-ride story is going to sound very familiar to me...and give me some deja vu.)

"Be warned...this book contains adult situations, graphic language, sexual content, and strong drug and alcohol references..."

(Now, I wonder if he and I ever worked...and/or partied...together.)

As he begins the first chapter, he states that he...like me...never knew his father. And now I have a feeling that as I continue through the book I'll be seeking other incidents that I can relate to, and have experienced. He describes his lineage of having some native ancestry (as do I)...again I'm drawn to having more of a personal connection with the author than being able to just read the book. I'm not sure what my response will be if I get to the end of this book and find that we are distant cousins, or something like that...

At the age of five, he recalls what can be defined as child abuse. Before you assume what may have happened: stop...and don't. What did happen put me a little off balance, but after being aware of events that have happened to members my family (and some friends), I wasn't surprised at all. (I've always hated leaving my children with others. I have always recommened that people don't. Later in life, you might be thankful that you didn't...or regret that you did.)

Kent mentions that one Christmas he received a radio. (Every so often I remember that I did, also.) He also describes building crystal radio sets, receivers with tubes, and more. As I read his descriptions I can sense his excitement about it, and I wish I had done so. Maybe I will...

This book can elighten a lot of people about a lot of things. You can read about how things were in radio broadcasting...which may help you to understand why things now are the way there are. The path some had to take to get into radio. And what we radio personalities had to, and do, go through for our profession. Some of what we think about in regards to the craft of being a disc jockey, and personality...

Half-way through the book it is appears that rest will be filled with stories with rooted in Chicago. Which is fine...it's just that I need to prepare to expect everything upcoming might be of more interest to someone who lived in that area at that time, or now lives there.

He tells a lot of stories about artists, events, and record companies. And how they relate to his personal life. But he will not discuss his one and only marriage. Due to what has happened in my personal life around marriages and engagements, I guess I don't have a problem with that. But, I wish he would have given some information about why he didn't want to talk about it: I guess I don't need the details, but how about an idea about why he won't reveal any details? (For example, there are details I don't want to share because it could involve others in legal problems that they have never been tied to.)

There are a lot of things that Kent writes about that I can surprisingly relate to: activities relating to personal relationships, professional stuggles that affect personal health and safety, and challenges to basic survival.

Kent has been inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest career as a DJ.

After reading the book, I found I was correct in my initial assumptions of this review: (with the exception of being in the Guiness Book of World Records) there's a lot about us that's very similar. I would love to spend a week with him and record our conversations about radio and life...where we could compare stories, and debate subjects and issues.

book review: Burying Don Imus

The author, Michael Awkward, is a professor in the Department of English Language and Literature, at the University of Michigan.

When I became aware of this book, I was excited to review it. I've been in radio broadcasting since 1979, and somewhat of a fan of Imus.

In the covering paper jacket of the hardback book, is written: "...Awkward privides the first balanced, critical analysis of Imus's comments..."

OK...we'll see...

In the preface: "This book explores why so many...felt that Imus's symbolic burial was utterly necessary.."

In the first chapter is a nice two paragraph setup of the career and caricature (if you will) of Imus. It's probably good that Awkward did that, because some who have attacked Imus didn't understand what he has done, and what he does: the style of his programs which have been very consistent...and acceptable in the past (until being fired from MSNBC).

Throughout the chapter, Awkward does a great job of explaining the tone of the program before Imus was fired. If you don't know where Imus came from, you probably don't understand how he got to where he was/is.

Something arose early in the book that annoyed me. (And I expected it would for the rest of the book.) I believe the fault belongs to the publisher. To access a footnote: I had to go to the rear of the book, locate the "Notes" section, and find the note that relates to the chapter...c'mon! Put footnotes, that relate to the chapter I'm reading, at the end of the chapter they are in.

Awkward states that he does not agree with the explanation Imus gave about why the Rutgers womens basketball team should not be made fun of. I won't try to speak for Awkward...I think it's best that it be read from his book so you can find if you understand, and agree, with his position. Due to my personal morals, I will say that I can somewhat agree with Awkward on this.

I almost want to close my review here. With Awkward stating that the basketball team is "fair game", I think that alone should be enough for a lot of people to want to read the book.

Towards the end of the first chapter, he states: "My intention in the following pages is to continue what Imus...started: to consider his skit in terms of the broad 'conext [of] what happens on this program'...the responses to it...the art of comedy...I hope to demonstrate that the conclusions at which people arrived about the nature of the nappy-headed hos skit reflect a failure to consider the comedic context..."

And that is VERY important. In my professional, and personal, life...many things have not been considered in proper and reasonable context. To attempt to defend against misunderstandings and misinterpretations, effort intensive and time consuming framing has been needed to keep material clearly defined. Which, after doing so, depreciates the worth of the attempt at comedy and/or "the joke". Bad jokes happen. Get over it.

In chapter six, "The Appeal of Imus in the Morning", Awkward states he was never aware of Imus until the show was on MSNBC. (I've known about, and tried to study, Imus since I began my radio career.) Because of what I've read in the chapter, I can say that Awkward "gets it".

Awkward mentions his memoirs, "Scenes of Instruction"...which I believe helped him to be open to understanding the program and those of us who like it. (I haven't read "Scenes of Instruction", but I suspect that when I write my memoirs they'll have a similar tone.)

At the end of the book, some post-MSNBC incidents are noted: a comment Imus made about Adam "Pac Man" Jones, a joke by Bernie Mac (that the audience at a fund-raiser for Barak Obama did not appreciate), and D.L. Hughley agreeing with Imus (about the appearance of the basketball team).

Good book. If you were of the opinion that Imus was evil, is evil, should have been fired, and should not have a stage...this book could cause you to consider how attempts at comedy can be viewed, and what can be considered acceptable behavior and attitudes in certain environments by some.

Due to some recent feedback I've received about what I sometimes say, and how I say it, and where and when I do...I guess I gotta explain this for some people.

I kinda enjoy being a curmudgeon sometimes. Most of my (professional) life I've griped, bitched, moaned, and whined for fun. When possible, turning the "joke" on the safest target: me. I try not to be one when in an environment that it would be, or is, inappropriate. But, sometimes my timing has been off...

I've tried to make it obvious that the curmudgeon-like characteristics of my persona and character is along the lines of Archie Bunker and Fred Sanford...if you take a deep look at them, they're not just rude or obnoxious for the sake of behaving that way: they are who they are because of what/where they have come from, and known...and what they currently know, and don't understand...they can be quick to judge and act based on portions of what makes them who they are. It doesn't make them bad people; right or wrong, they are just the type of people that they are.

(After the following stories that relate to what I said previously about Bunker and Sanford, I shall return to my curmudgeonly considerations below...)

When I was in high school in West Germany, 1978-1979, I lived in a dormitory. I played American-style football on the school team. There was only one person I'm aware of who would allow some of us...who were black to stay with her on the weekends. I remember being prepared by some of my teamates as I walked to meet her for the first time: "...Now...you need to understand...she's an old white woman...kind of set in her ways...she don't mean no harm...Mrs. Case is just the way she is..."

Mrs. Case, a white woman, would feed us and make sure we were OK and safe. I don't know what her past is, but Mrs. Case described us as (her) "colored boys": "...my boys will be over this weekend...you know, my colored boys that stay with me." If you ever took the time to get to know Mrs. Case, you would realized that...this is the only way she ever knew and understood as to how refer to our ethnicity. For whatever reason, she didn't use "black" on "negro". In her defense (in which I will always be), maybe because (to her) those terms were demeaning/derogatory/antagonistic. Who knows why, and it doesn't matter why. I expect something in her past led her to use the terminology the way she did. We could tell by her actions that her use of the term "colored" was intended and meant to be used with much love and affection, and we accepted her support. We listened to her heart, and not her words...

For a little while I lived in Rantoul, Illinois and became very active with the local citizen band (CB) radio community. One day some of us went to help someone erect a tower at their home. We were a mixed bunch of different kind of folk: male, female, young, old, black, white, etcetera. Later, the owner invited me to dinner.

After dinner, he said he needed to be honest with me, and we went to his bedroom so he could show me what was in his closet: his KKK robes. He asked if I were afraid. I said that I was not afraid of the robes.

Over more beer, we talked about why he was a member: it was his belief that there should be no mixing of heritages. I have never wanted to tell anyone what they can, and cannot, believe. And that was that. We remained as friendly as we could, and...because he continued to have me over for beer and meals...he was kicked-out of the KKK.

I've met some people in my professional life who I found to be privately, and when around me, greatly bigoted. It was VERY weird: the person was cordial, polite, and personable to those they had a business relationship with...but when Caucasians were not around, they let their true feelings show! "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"...

There have been times that some of the crap I've said when "on stage" was taken much more seriously than it was ever meant. It's happened so much I've asked family members and friends to not listen to my radio shows and comedy routines. I've always tried to make sure that it was very clear that I meant no intentional offense...because, if I ever did, I want it to be very clear that I mean to offend in the most harshest way possible.

There are very few I can openly joke with that know and understand I'm not "taking a swing" at anyone, and I'm just riffing...

Stern, Greaseman, Imus...we've all crossed that line with no malicious intentions, just collateral damage. Lenny Bruce...Don Rickles...Richard Pryor...Crosby, Stills, and Nash...The Dixie Chicks...Michael Richards...Peter Griffin...being creative involves errors in judgement and material in an attempt to try to get it to be what it should for the audience it is intended for. You don't know you've gone too far...until you have.

Having said all of that, I also remind everyone:

you chose to stay for the rest of the show (you could have left, but you chose to stay)...

"There are controls on your radio/television..."

and, you can continue to read the material, or stop reading it and move on to something else.

"Beer in Hell" book is worth reading/owning

I received a copy of the book I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell from the assistant to Tucker Max. (Thanks, Ian...)

Tucker Tibor Max put together a bunch of short stories about his life. (Due to the success of the book, a movie of the same title was made.) This isn't just any old regular boring biography...created in 2002, his website sets the stage for the stories he tells:

"My name is Tucker Max, and I am an asshole.

"I get excessively drunk at inappropriate times, disregard social norms, indulge every whim, ignore the consequences of my actions, mock idiots and posers, sleep with more women than is safe or reasonable, and just generally act like a raging dickhead.

"But, I do contribute to humanity in one very important way. I share my adventures with the world..."

I already like this guy...you know what you're gonna get before you get it. Now, it's up to you to walk away...or deal with it.

I like his attitude. (As a child) I stopped trying to convince people to believe that I was telling the truth: it was a lot of effort for people who just weren't worth it. When you tell the truth, and are not believed...what else do you have to work with? You loose. And how important is it that a particular person believes you, anyway?

Some people will frown upon the actions of this asshole...but not me: the people that allowed him to behave they way he has can be just as guilty for feeding the animal. (A very long time ago I seemed to have lost my ability to be shocked and horrified: I know of too many things people have done that are very much not "normal" and against conservative morals. And, trying to be very liberal regarding some lifestyle choices and activities, I just try to "live and let live".)

For many years I've been looking forward to writing books about my personal and professional lives. Some won't believe the stories, and other will be appalled to know of some things I have been aware of, done and participated in. But, as this book is, I'm sure it'll be good reading...

I read the first story in the book, "The Famous Sushi Pants Story", and decided to not read the entire book and then post a review. Because these are short stories, and I expect the rest of the stories to be formatted as "Sushi Pants" was, you should be able to read a story when you need to kill some time...and then put down the book and do something else. Buy the book, and keep it handy for those types of times during a day.

In 2003, he posted an account of his relationship with 1999's "Miss Vermont". She filed a lawsuit stating that her privacy had been invaded, and a judge ordered Max to not write about her. Later, the former "Miss Vermont" dismissed the lawsuit. (Again, I say: at various times, someone fed the "monster"...)

A page on his website I love is the "Date Application": he's up-front about his likes, dislikes, and expectations that hopefully will save him...and other women...a lot of wasted time from having to do what I call the "date dance" (where we spend a lot of unnecessary time with eachother to later find that it really wasn't worth it).

I don't "date"...never have. I've spent time with women...doing "something", and doing "nothing"...but that's it. When I've taken a woman to a movie, it's because one or both of us wanted to see it. When I've taken a woman out to eat it's because one or both of us were hungry, or wanted to try the food at the joint. To feel as if I needed to create an event and spend money to spend time with someone has always been the first sign that I need to reconsider what kind of relationship I should be having with that person. I think this is where Max and I kinda think alike. (You can imagine my attitude towards "Valentine's Day"...and Christmas...I'm more lenient when it comes to birthdays, unless you EXPECT me to get a present.)

Max founded Rudius Media, an internet-based publishing outlet and management firm. It has closed. Too bad...I would have been VERY interested to see what projects might have come from them...

I think you can get these used in some places, but I would NOT recommend buying either. B&D is all on my site, and the pick-up line book is kinda crappy..."

Bloggers must be more honest...YEA!

Thank you, FTC! The Federal Trade Commission has issued new guidance regarding endorsements...which now also applies to bloggers.

In radio, we as air talent have been given "considerations" for doing commercials and/or endorsements...whether it be in the form of paid compensation, or services, or products. The only time I've had a problem with that was when the person speaking on behalf of the product was lying. And that can happen in various forms: "...I love it...I use it everyday...I wouldn't use anything else..." When I represented, or presented, products...if I said I liked them, it was because I did. If I could not endorse the product, I just performed a commercial announcement. (And, that includes radiothons and telethons: to work for one, I had to believe in the charity or cause.)

I've worked for program directors who told us, the air talent, that we were to present every song we play as a great song: "We only play the BEST music". (According to who?) It's called a "postioning statement", and the strategy is that if it is repeated enough maybe the audience will believe that it is true. (Yeah...right.) There are all kinds of reasons for playing a song, and it isn't always because the song has any redeeming artistic value or that the audience of that particular radio station likes it.

I hosted, and programmed the music for, a "jazz" show. And for which I was on a national music reporting panel for Radio & Records, a trade magazine. I reported on the songs and artists that I played, and how often I played them. I tried to listen to every piece of music that was sent to me. At the time there was a George Benson album that Warner Brothers was trying to promote heavily. All of the other radio stations and shows across the country were reporting it as "hot" (it was in very high rotation on-air); I reported it as low...because I was only playing one track off of the entire CD. After listening to the album, I decided that there was other (new) music that deserved more airtime on my show because they had more music of the quality that my audience preferred. I chose to serve and be responsible to my audience, on the radio station I was on, and in the city I was in. A vice-president of Warner Brothers called and said to me, how could I consider that I knew better than all of the other programmers across the nation? I was removed from the music reporting panel a few weeks later...and a lot of record companies, who had been begging for me to listen to and play their music, stopped sending it to me.

Bloggers can be considered to be “word-of-mouth” marketers. Now, any blogger who makes an endorsement must disclose material connections they may have with the product or service. And I'm all for it...

I believe that there are products that I have not had opportunities to review because there are other bloggers (and members of the media) who appear to give "consistent" positive reviews. I have compared some of my reviews of products to those of others, and I wonder why they never noted things I did. And, I seem to find a lot of reviews that all seem (too much) alike. Others appear to just be "puff pieces". Some of them make me wonder if they even opened the package and tried the product...

Of the products I have "reviewed" and tested, NEVER was I ever instructed by those who provided it to give ONLY a positive report. It was never implied nor expected that I would. If I found that my experience with a product was negative, I might contact the manufacturer to see if there's something wrong with the item...or if they can give me a reason to reconsider my opinion. Sometimes I can just give a technical report based on specifications. And, there have been times when I felt I was not the best candidate to do the review (and I might refer them to someone else).

Manufacturers and marketers should also remember: if I have not had exposure to your product, there is a chance that I have been exposed to products of your competitors. And so have other potential customers that you may have lost access to.

"The making of Glenn Beck"

I avoided Glenn...I tried to never: look into his eyes, and speak to him. I never had a problem with other members of the on-air staff; Tim Hattrick was a cool dude...I imagine he still is. But the pompasity around Glenn was deep and heavy.

...Beck called Hattrick into his office and laid down the law. "I remember Beck sat me down and pulled out a notepad on which he had drawn a planet being orbited by satellites," says Hattrick. "On the big planet, Glenn wrote 'Me.' Then he pointed to the orbiting satellites and wrote names on them, such as 'Tim,' 'News,' and 'Clydie Clyde.' I'll never forget Beck telling me I was a satellite..."

Beck never grew close to Hattrick, who thought his new partner was talented but full of himself and incapable of thinking of anything but radio and ratings. "Beck lived, ate, drank and breathed radio," says Hattrick, who still works as a DJ in Phoenix. "It was impossible to talk to him about anything without reference to how to bring it into the show. I never once saw any evidence that he could turn it off. In that sense he was a one-dimensional person. But he was great at being a grandstanding, pompous idiot and shaking the brushes for attention."

In radio, some of us are "jocks"...and we want to be "jocks"! We want to have fun, relate to our audience, and serve our community. Tim is a "jock"...I am a "jock". It's what we've enjoyed, and what we're good at. What's wrong with that?

...KZZP sponsored a free Richard Marx concert at the Tempe El Diablo stadium in downtown Phoenix...(Beck) and Hattrick arrived at the stadium early on the night of the show and gave the sound technician $500 to play a prerecorded Y95 promo moments before KZZP's Bruce Kelly was scheduled to announce the show. As an audience of nearly 10,000 waited for the show to begin, the KZZP mics were cut and Beck's voice suddenly boomed out of the stadium's sound system: "The Y95 Zoo team is proud to present … Richard Marx!" As soon as he heard his name, an oblivious Marx walked onto the stage and began to play. As the KZZP crew stood stunned offstage, scattered Y95 agents popped up and began throwing "Y95 Zoo" T-shirts in every direction to a cheering crowd.

...In September 1988, Beck and Hattrick invited Jessica Hahn onto the show. That month Playboy was featuring a pictorial of the former church secretary, who had become famous when televangelist Jim Bakker admitted to his affair with her.

"I got up to go to the men's room and quickly found myself surrounded at the urinal by Glenn and Tim, who began lobbying me to hire Jessica as a permanent fixture of the morning show. They negotiated the deal, which was a rental car, an apartment and $2,000 a month."

...The hiring of Hahn as the zoo team's "prize-and-weather bunny" became an international story. Johnny Carson and David Letterman joked about it, editorial writers debated it, and as a result Y95 received a much-needed ratings jolt. When People magazine visited the station looking for a quote, Beck described Hahn's radio debut as "awesome" and explained that she filled the void of a "prize bunny for our zoo." The trio was short-lived, however. After a few weeks on the job, Hahn asked to be transferred to a nighttime slot.

Her feelings were hurt. She REALLY thought that she would be given a chance in radio. After a few days, I realized what was going on and that she would not get a serious opportunity to build a career. I was pissed-off because I knew her feelings were going to be, and had been, hurt. She was a very nice person, and nice to me. I left Y95 to go to a radio station in Milwaukee, and after I left she had moved to nights. I tried to contact her to see if I might be able to help, but was never able to reach her. We haven't been in contact since. After getting to know Jess, I realized how Bakker was able to do what he did: she is one of those people who wants to trust others, and she will. (I still miss ya, Jess.)

...some of the predictions in the Communications Industry Forecast from the private equity firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson, scheduled for release on Tuesday.

The segments where advertising will decline most rapidly in 2009...are newspapers (down 18.7 percent, to $35.5 billion); consumer magazines (down 14.8 percent, to $11 billion); radio (down 11.7 percent, to $15.8 billion); and broadcast television (down 10.1 percent, to $43.0 billion). Veronis Suhler expects a few sectors to increase their advertising dollars this year, including mobile (up 18.1 percent, to $1.3 billion) and the Internet (up 9.2 percent, to $23.8 billion).

...the media industry...is expected to be the third-fastest-growing economic sector over the next five years, after mining and construction....it will be drawn from areas like word-of-mouth marketing and public relations (with a 9.2 percent compound annual growth rate from 2008 through 2013), branded entertainment (9.3 percent) and the Internet and mobile devices (10.2 percent).

(Which brings me to the section where I rant) IF YOU GIVE THEM A REASON TO READ IT, MAYBE THEY WILL!!! No different than TV, radio, vodcasts/podcasts: give them, your audience, a reason to be interested in your content! Show an interest in them, and their interests...

Today is my last day with Convergys, formerly Keane AZ. I have accepted a position with another firm.

DISCLAIMER: The following is the sole opinion of...and does not represent Keane Inc, Convergys, Microsoft, or any of the employees who work for these companies. The purpose of this letter is to present personal opinion.

My experiences with Keane were nothing but extrodinary (sp): I learned a great deal, made many friends, and enjoyed a professional environment that made working here highly enjoyable. The past seven months (of the 8 months I've been here) have been a
great working experience. There was a time when I told people that Keane was easily one of the best companies in Tucson.

However, since the Convergys take-over, IMHO, things have definately (sp) gone down hill. Gone are the feelings of a united group of people working togather (sp); this has been replaced with micro-managing. Gone is the enjoyment of each new day; this has been replaced by a Gestapo-style system of time management and the continual loss of research time and other things. In short, the working aptnosphere (sp) has become filled with tension and politics.

I would like to thank the following people for their assistance, leadership, and commitment...You are all excellent at what you do and are a huge asset to this company and Microsoft. I hope that you all get the respect that you deserve.

I'm sorry if this letter angered, annoyed, or upset anyone. But I decided not to emulate some of the hypocritical people who have, in the past, given accolades to the company while at the same time announcing their decision to leave. I DO hope that all who are here will achieve success in their futures and will strive to be true to themselves. I'm hope I have the pleasure of working with you again.

"Just read a review online. There must be some out there."

I should parrot what others have said, didn't say, tried, didn't try, missed...

I'm shocked. The responder doesn't "get it". Oh, well...I'll just promote more what your competition will provide.

review of One-Eyed Monster

Thanks to Brian Gross, the president of BSG Public Relations for arranging for a copy of the movie to be sent to me. (We Virgos gotta stick together...)

The DVD arrived from Liberation Entertainment...

Synopsis

In a darkly comic homage to "Alien" and "The Thing", the cast and crew of an adult film, stranded in a blizzard, must band together against a mysterious and deadly alien, which has possessed the actor with the biggest part--Ron Jeremy (naturally). Now, with the monster on a killing spree, the race is on to trap and destroy it before there are more victims of its peculiar skills.

The preview on the website gave me the impression that it would have a horror-based plot...(but not taking itself too seriously) with some comedy. Five minutes into the movie I noticed on the DVD box: "A comedy by the Fields brothers". ("Doh!...")

It runs over one hour and fifteen minutes. Due to language and subject matter, it is for adults...there is some nudity...no "bloody messes", though.

I consider it a movie to be watched with "friends": get it from Netflix, grab some food and drink, relax, and put it on. As with anything: don't expect "too much" from it, and it's possible you could enjoy what you receive.

Notes I made while watching the movie:

I wasn't sure what to expect regarding production quality...most of it was good, like any other movie you'd expect to see in the theater. There were some poor effects, but they appeared...I noticed...and really didn't care.

(After you watch the movie, the following observation will make sense...) Some of the dialog between Ron and Veronica seems to be introspective...

I think I've seen most adult sexually related devices, and the "neural tactile simulator" seems familiar to one now on the market, but with some added processing power I think this thing could be a consideration for some...

In general, I liked the dialog...

Halfway through the movie, I began to lose (some) interest...

Then, Charles Napier appeared...and I expected things to perk-up some: more horror, comedy...or both. For me, it did (I won't spoil his "break-out" scene)...

It does have some (kinda) "scary" parts...

Some parts of the movie (plot) are weak. I kept hoping the movie would hold together to the end. It did (kinda).

The acting of one guy doesn't get better, and becomes monotonous rather quickly...

Some events in the movie, to my surprise, were "wrapped-up" at the end.

If you watch all of the credits, there are some interesting facts that are verified.
